Barr Lake State Park
Located just over 30 minutes away from downtown Denver, this beautiful front range lake is perfect for kayaking. Motorized boats are limited to trolling so the waters are calm for all paddling enthusiasts. Those looking to fish from kayaks or on the designated fishing pier will encounter catfish, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, walleye, and more.
Standley Lake Regional Park
This reservoir has 1,063 acres of surface area to explore. The park itself is 30 minutes northwest of Denver in Westminster. Kayakers are allowed in specified areas of the lake and are the only vehicles allowed on the water. This makes the water extremely calm and therefore great for beginners and children.
Bear Creek Lake Park
This reservoir located just 20 minutes outside of Denver is the perfect place to get out on the water. The water is open to paddleboards, kayaks, and even some motorized boats. Its location in the foothills makes it a beautiful sunset destination as well. For non water activities, there are plenty of paved trails for walking, running, and biking.
Chatfield State Park
Located a little over 30 minutes away from downtown, Chatfield is a local go-to for watersports. The main reservoir is open to motorized boats and can get a bit busy on the weekends. Kayaking along the shore of the main reservoir is possible for the more advanced paddler, but the adjacent reservoir is great for beginners and children.
Cherry Creek State Park
Much like Chatfield, Cherry Creek Reservoir is open to motorized boats. Its large size makes it easy to find calm water. It is located 30 minutes southeast of Denver and is a great spot for all types of recreation. On the reservoir, kayakers can travel along the shore or explore the open water with ease. Swimmers can use the sandy swim beach that has a protected area in the reservoir.
